matthew was educated at oxford university and at the west surrey college of art and design. In the process, he studied History as well as painting and became increasingly aware of the unexpected connections between the two, how each can be enriched by the other. He has taught art, history and history of art and this has enriched and stimulated his own work, leading him to question ideas and working practices that otherwise he may have taken for granted. He has exhibited widely and was twice short-listed for the Nat-West painting prize and has twice featured in art review, although, by all accounts, brian sewell once said that he ‘could not draw’. matthew’s work liminal [right top] will be featured, on screen at the upcoming venice biennale.
in an exciting new develpment 'liminal' has been selected as part of 'the path' video installation featuring at the venice biennale fringe show later this year. you can see the work, first hand, in the show.
having had the opportunity to work with matthew on 3 previous occasions i am delighted to be able to have the space, at ground, to dive further into the themes in his work, what drives him to paint and the passion he has for the very act of doing so. underlying all seems to be a search for the image that most expresses what it is to be alive, both alone and in a crowd. a film, commissioned for the show and filmed by one of his sons, will play in the space to accompany him.
this is a snippet from a film, made by matthew's son, about the need to paint. the full version is playing in the gallery alongside his paintings. Pop in and take a look. or if that is not possible then you can watch the full version here.
